About
Internet start-ups and entrepreneurialism; independent music; technology and the law.
I've always loved technology. I've always loved computers. I began designing websites when I was 13, using just a text editor and learning from the HTML source code of sites I admired (those happenened to be MTGNews and Musician's Friend). It was a perfect mix of creativity, design, technology, and problem solving, and it's been one of my favorite hobbies since then.
I'm interested in how technology impacts our lives—how we access information, how it expands and limits what we do, and how fast the law is changing because of it.
I love sports. I love baseball and going to Phillies games with my dad. Analyzing statistics and searching for trends have increased my passion for the game, opening up whole new schools of thought I can't wait to explore.
This website
AndrewGioia.com has taken many forms over the past 7 years—college weblog, design portfolio, resume. Today I hope to present a little bit about my professional and personal life while showcasing a smattering of what I love to do: design, application development, music production, and writing. I've pushed all photos onto Flickr and all blog posts (however sporadic they always are) onto Posterous this time. Soon I'll put up some fuller pages on specific projects new technology demos. Enjoy!
If you have a compatible browser, you should be viewing this site in Droid Serif, part of the Google Web Font project. If not, you still might get Hoefler Text or maybe Baskerville (and hopefully no further than Georgia...). I built this version on top of a stripped down HTML5 Boilerplate, with very minimal PHP for basically no more than templating. All styles are homegrown, though I do use ColorZilla's CSS Gradient Generator. Media Queries are also used to make this presentable on handheld devices; go ahead and shrink the page to see them in action!
I always strive to build web sites that not only fully comply with the W3's standards for XHTML 1.0 strict doctypes, but remain completely and fully usable across all browsers, from IE6 on up. I only have one image on this website, and because of this I am using a few CSS3 properties that you may not get to appreciate on any version of IE lower than 9, and possibly Firefox 3.5 and down. Just start using Chrome already and you can see them!
Abbreviated biography
Born in Towson, Maryland (1985). Raised in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.
Last May I graduated from the University of Michigan Law School out in beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan. I studied political science at Cornell University, graduating in 2007 with a B.A. in Government and a minor in Information Science. West Chester, Pennsylvania has been my home base since 2002.
Though it's been difficult finding free time these past few years, I still try to play my guitar and banjo as much as possible. I listen to everything by Mike Kinsella (American Football, Owen), Sufjan Stevens, and most of the bands off Polyvinyl Records; read as much from Carver, Salinger, and Apokalips as I can; and will never turn down a whiffle ball game or fantasy baseball invite.
Today in my off time, I study Pitch f/x data and help my brother develop cool new web applications to make life a little easier. Most importantly, I spend as much time with Elisabeth as she lets me :)
